Stomach virus spread on a Cruise Ship

Over 300 holidaymakers on board a Fred Olsen’s cruise liner to the Norwegian Fjords contracted a Gastroenteritis type illness and as a result, suffered from chronic vomiting and diarrhoea.

Hundreds of passengers were confined to their cabins missing out on the cruise holiday experience they paid for. The illness spread quickly from person to person by touching surfaces that had not been cleaned. Due to the illness spreading quickly and the severity of the symptoms, the captain had to turn the cruise ship around early to get the sick passengers back home.

Many passengers confirmed that they still suffered from symptoms once they were back at home. Holidaymakers who fell victim to the illness were outraged that their holiday had been ruined and that the effects were still affecting them at home.

The cruise firm stated that the ship would be systematically sanitized before the next group of holidaymakers came on board.

Compensation has been offered in the form of a refund of one day's cost of the cruise as well as a voucher for up to 50 per cent off a future Norwegian Fjord cruise. However others sought to bring a claim against the tour operator to obtain the true amount of compensation they deserved.

If you have fallen ill whilst on a cruise, as a result of your cruise liner’s poor hygiene practices, you may be able to make a claim for your injuries and financial losses. It is important that you get independent expert legal advice, preferably as soon as possible.
